Several state privacy laws give you the right to stop a business selling or sharing your personal information. PlanVault does sell and share personal information, so the right applies here.
Using it costs nothing, needs no account, and changes nothing else about how we treat you. The rest of this page is the practical detail.
What is being sold or shared
California law defines a sale as disclosing personal information to a third party for money or other valuable consideration, and a share as disclosing it for cross-context behavioral advertising. Advisors in PlanVault's network pay PlanVault to be introduced to people like you. Under those definitions, introducing you to one or more Advisors is a sale.
That is the whole service, not a side effect of it. The privacy policy lists the exact categories that leave PlanVault, in section 6.
What happens if you opt out
PlanVault will not match you with any Advisor. There is no version of the service that introduces you to someone without disclosing your information to them, so the opt-out and the match cannot coexist.
An introduction already made cannot be recalled. An Advisor who already received your information keeps their own record of it under their own privacy policy, and you would need to contact that Advisor or Advisors directly to have it deleted. Opting out stops what has not happened yet.
How to exercise the right
Email privacy@planvault.org with the subject line "Do Not Sell or Share" and include:
- Your full name
- The email address you submitted, so we can find your record
- The phone number you submitted
- The state you live in
We use those details only to verify the request and locate the record. Nothing else is required, and there is no form to fill in.
That address is read by a person. If you would rather use one address for everything, or you do not get a confirmation within 10 business days, send the same request to susan@planvault.org. It reaches the same people and counts from the day you sent the first one.
How long it takes
We confirm receipt within 10 business days and act on the request within the statutory window, no later than 45 days from receipt. If we need the one extension the law allows, we will tell you why before the 45 days are up.
We do not charge for a request, and we will not offer you a worse service, a different price, or a slower response because you made one.
Browser signals and authorized agents
Global Privacy Control ("GPC") is a setting some browsers and extensions send automatically to signal an opt-out. Where we receive it, we treat it as a valid request for that browser. It cannot reach a record you already submitted, so if you have already completed the questionnaire, send the email as well.
An authorized agent may submit on your behalf. Send written permission signed by you along with the request, so we can confirm the agent is acting for you.
Your other privacy rights
Opting out is one of several rights. You can also ask what we hold, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, or ask for a portable copy. Section 11 of the privacy policy lists them, and section 12 explains how to make any of those requests. Our contact page has our other details.
